For all of us this part of the pond, Minneapolis is where Prince is or, at the very most, where the Walsh brothers in Beverly Hills, 90210, hailed from. It is also, though, home to a great hip-hop scene. This is where the Doom-tree collective comes from, a major player in the latest mash-up craze with the “13 Chambers” project attributed to WuGazi: ie., Wu-Tang Clan meets Fugazi (the iconic post-hardcore band from the US). On paper, the whole operation could be like swearing inside a church but the free download from their website, wugazi.com, has conquered even the single greatest radical fans (and through SoundCloud, the album has gone way over the one million plays mark). 13 Chambers is a divertissement, extremely fun to listen to, but the work behind it all is the result of one year of work. It does sound magnificent. So much so that the artists involved have blessed the results: “Wu-Tang’s management sent us an email saying they enjoyed it”, says Swiss Andy from Doom-tree, “And there was also a tweet from Dischord”. “I have seen a ton of tweets from people who had never heard Fugazi, but after this started getting into them. That is the best outcome I could think of”.
